Peter Johnston, Architect, PC is a full service design firm established in 1995. Today, in addition to upscale residential projects the firm is focused on the hospitality and education sectors.
The firm has extensive experience in the creation of restaurant/hospitality venues, where its reputation for a dramatic use of space and lighting adds a sense of stage crafting and atmosphere to the completed environment. PJA has received recognition for its restaurant and bar projects that bring Manhattan-style sophistication west of the Hudson to Hoboken’s resurrected waterfront esplanade. The restaurants illustrate PJA’s signature look through a rich palette of materials and a strong interplay of geometric form and light. Levels of translucency, materiality and movement are explored to create an evening dinner theatre atmosphere.
The design of institutions for education is another priority of the firm. Among PJA’s most challenging collegiate projects was upgrading a physical education building, which Johnston describes as, “Mid-seventies brutalism in the form of a big undistinguished concrete block.” The resulting transformation revealed a vibrant, textured and flowing space that inspires athletic activity. This collective body of work also includes theatre renovations, dining facilities, housing and campus master planning.
The work of Peter Johnston, Architect, PC has been featured in top quality magazines including, Interior Design, Hospitality Design, and Interiors & Sources. Peter Johnston is on the faculty of FIT’s interior design department, where he teaches upper level design studio. He studied under AIA Gold Medalist Riccardo Legoretta before receiving his Masters of Architecture with top honors from the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA.
